Azure – Subscriptions – Overview

Azure subscriptions are the foundation of the Azure platform, providing a way for organizations to consume and manage the resources they need to run their workloads. A subscription is a container for Azure resources, such as virtual machines, storage accounts, and virtual networks. It serves as the billing and management boundary for Azure resources, allowing organizations to manage access, billing, and security for all resources within the subscription.

Each Azure subscription is associated with an Azure Active Directory (AAD) tenant, which is used to authenticate and authorize access to the subscription. Users and groups within the AAD tenant can be granted access to the subscription, with different roles and permissions to manage the resources within it. The owner of the subscription, usually the person who created it, is responsible for managing access and permissions for other users.

There are different types of Azure subscriptions available, including pay-as-you-go, reserved instances, and Azure Free Account. Pay-as-you-go subscriptions are the most common type, allowing organizations to pay for the resources they use on a monthly basis. Reserved instances provide a way for organizations to save money by committing to a specific amount of usage for a period of time. Azure Free Account is a free trial subscription that provides a certain amount of free services and resources for a limited time.

Azure subscriptions also play a key role in managing costs and budgets for an organization. Each subscription has its own spending limit, which can be set to ensure that resources are not consumed beyond a specified budget. Additionally, Azure Cost Management can be used to monitor and track usage and costs across multiple subscriptions, providing detailed reporting and analysis of resource usage and costs.

In summary, Azure subscriptions provide a way for organizations to consume and manage the resources they need to run their workloads. It serves as the billing and management boundary for Azure resources, allowing organizations to manage access, billing, and security for all resources within the subscription. It also plays a key role in managing costs and budgets for an organization.
